Capsule Geology

The Central area is in the central-north part of the Turnagain ultramafic complex about 3 kilometres northwest of the Horsetrail nickel deposit (104I 119).

The Turnagain ultramafic complex was intruded in the Lower Jurassic (and older?) into Upper Paleozoic (?) and/or Triassic (?) metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Quesnel Terrane. It is in faulted contact on the east and north with slate and phyllite of the Paleozoic Road River Group (Ancestral North America). The magmatic evolution of the composite intrusion extended over at least four million years in the Early Jurassic (ca. 189-185 Ma). This span of intrusive activity is a minimum as the oldest Stage 1 component of the Turnagain complex has yet to be dated (Nixon et al. (2018-2019)).

In 2007, Hard Creek Nickel drilled 4 holes (07-232 to -235) over a 1-kilometre distance. Only hole 07-234 yielded significant results. Hole 07-234 was drilled to test a magnetic anomaly coincident with dunite outcrops and an inferred serpentinite band. The hole was reported to have encountered some grades of interest near surface but failed to fully explain the magnetic anomaly found in the area. The hole intersected variably serpentine- and tremolite-altered dunite and wehrlite with a few short intersections of diorite. Visual sulphide estimates were generally below 0.5 per cent, occasionally 3 per cent and even 10 per cent over short intervals. Total nickel analyses were 0.23 per cent from 48 to 60 metres (Assessment Report 29748).

See Turnagain Nickel (Horsetrail) (104I 119) for further details of the Turnagain property, including geology, work history and bibliography.
